Stoffels says the regional organisation also allowed product and service innovations in one country to be more easily transferred to other geographies and markets.

Minova began operating in South Africa in 1975 and has a long history of investment in research and development to help miners overcome the testing local conditions.

Many of the company’s products – cement capsules, Autorock drill rigs and cement foams – were ‘firsts’ in the South African market and continue to set the standard for the industry.

With more than 380 employees, the operations in South Africa are among the largest by country in Minova International.

The company’s major market is the gold mining industry, followed by platinum, coal and a number of tunnelling and civil engineering projects. The company also exports from South Africa to the US, South America, Russia, Germany and Africa.

Minova RSA has two main manufacturing sites. A Minova plant in Isando manufactures chemical resins, Autorock drill rigs for safe drilling of roof bolt holes and a number of accessories. A second plant at Alrode manufactures the company’s wide range of cementitious products. An Autorock maintenance and repair facility is located in Rustenburg.

The company continues to invest heavily in local research and development and has pioneered products that are now gaining acceptance as the best of their kind in the world. The locally developed CAPCEM KT rigid thin spray liner is now manufactured and sold by Minova in Russia, and was recently launched in the Australian market.

Minova also manufactures resins capsules and steel bolts for other local suppliers.  Sales and service manager, Jason Matthews, says Minova is increasing its presence in the New Zealand market.

“The country has only a small number of underground coal mines, but Minova products are now used at a number of major mines on the North and South Island.

Minova introduced local coal mine operators to world-standard resin capsule bolting when it entered the country in 2002 through the acquisition of a majority stake in Minetek.

Acceptance of the practice is growing as local collieries appreciate the safety and productivity advantages of resin capsule roof bolting over traditional ground support methods.

The company is the largest manufacturer of resin capsules in India and recently commissioned a second resin capsule production plant at its Hyderabad site. Minova is the only mechanised manufacturer of resin capsules in India.

Minova’s technical adviser for India, Donald O’Connor, says coal production has jumped by 60% over the past decade, but power shortages are still a major problem.

“The mining practices developed in Europe and the US since the 1980s could alleviate this problem by greatly increasing productivity and safety in the underground coal mines of India.

“Our focus over the next few years will be on introducing more of these proven methods, including many of the Minova-developed technologies for strata control and mine ventilation.”

O’Connor said Minova could also help India meet its energy needs by playing a part in hydro-electric tunnelling projects in the foothills of the Himalayas.

“The Indian Government has ambitious plans for hydro power to deliver up to 40% of the country’s electricity needs.

“Many of these projects will need world-best expertise in rock support and groundwater control, which Minova has developed in major tunnelling projects in Europe.”

Warren says the collapse of pre-drilled shot holes is a significant problem for underground miners and can create major cost and time delays.

The Singapore office services the civil engineering, tunneling and mining industries.
