Minova International’s European region is headquartered in Essen, Germany and accounts for about 40% of the company’s global revenues.

The Europe region covers a vast geographical area from Spain to Siberia and has therefore recently been divided into three smaller management groups – Western Europe, Central Europe and countries in Commonwealth of Independent States.

From its traditional bases in Germany and Poland, Minova has expanded aggressively over the past decade, with entry into large, new markets such as Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The company continues to extend its reach with new branches opened recently in Italy, Austria and Romania.

Minova in Europe has also made a series of acquisitions of bolt and support system manufacturers, which have transformed the company from a chemical business into a chemical and steel business with an unrivalled range of products, services and accessories.

While most of the company’s sales are generated by the mining industry, Minova has also been a leader in the tunnel and civil engineering markets in Europe for many years.

The Europe region is led by Chief Executive Officer, Europe, Jan Petzold. He is supported by Chief Financial Officer, Europe, Detlev Beier, also based in Essen, and Chief Operating Officer, Europe, Zbig Kuska, who is also the head of Minova’s business in Poland.

Minova is the leading supplier of rock support, ground consolidation, water sealing and ventilation products to the mining and civil engineering industries in the United Kingdom.

The company is also well known for the design and manufacture of a range of rock bolting machines, including the Super Turbo Bolter and the Rib Bolter. These are supplied to Minova companies and external customers in mining, tunnelling and civil engineering industries around the world.

The coal industry continues to generate most of company’s sales in the UK, but the civil engineering and tunnelling markets are increasingly important.

UK General Manager, Andy Oxley, says the company’s diversification outside the coal industry has made a significant advance with the recent acquisition of Weldgrip, which imports ground stabilisation products.

“Almost half of Weldgrip’s business is in civil engineering, and provides a strong platform for building this side of our business in the next few years.”

Oxley says Minova in the UK offers an unmatched range of products to the coal mining industry, but the local team is most proud of its commitment to providing technical advice and support direct to customers.

“We have a great deal of experience and technical expertise, with a number of mining engineers among our ranks.

“Our advice and support is available to the customers whenever they need it. Coal mining is 24/7 business and can’t afford to sit idle.

“We will be on the mine site as soon as we get a call, working with the customer to resolve an issue and get them back into production.”

Minova is expanding rapidly in Ukraine, which is second only to Russia in coal reserves among all countries in Europe and Eurasia.

In 2008, Minova established a wholly owned business in Ukraine and built a plant to manufacture a range of steel bolts.

New facilities for manufacturing cement powders and resin capsules were commissioned in late 2009, which allowed Minova to produce locally all of its core products for the Ukraine market.

The number of Minova employees in Ukraine has grown along with the increase in the company’s operations.

Minova’s chief executive in Europe, Jan Petzold, says he believes the Ukraine mining industry will experience strong growth over the next few years.

“The country has excellent coal reserves and there is great potential to improve the output and productivity of the country’s coal mining industry.

“We are working hard at introducing local industry to the kind of products and technologies that have proved very popular in other markets.

“Modern rock support, ground consolidation and ventilation products improve mine output, sometimes by a factor of even two or three times.

“But it’s the improvement in safety performance that is really attracting attention.”

Minova’s business in Switzerland has been a world leader in rock support, resins and cements for tunneling projects for almost three decades.

The business was established in 1982, shortly after Minova’s successful involvement in the Furka Tunnel in Switzerland. This was the first major civil project in the world to use resins for rock stabilisation and groundwater control.

Tunneling continues to be the major market for Minova in Switzerland, with the balance generated by civil engineering projects.

The Birmensdorf-based company employs 30 staff and is led by civil engineer, Charles Bitz.

“Tunneling is a growth industry all around Europe, particularly in Spain and in many of the stronger economies of Central and Eastern Europe.
“The expertise that Minova pioneered and developed in many projects in the Swiss Alps is increasingly in demand.”

Bitz says Minova’s recent acquisitions in France, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic of manufacturers of steel bolts and supports had brought an unmatched range of products into the Minova group.

“We have more solutions and more expertise than ever before.”

Minova Switzerland recently moved to 100% ownership of a Carspach (Alsace)-based company that manufactures Ancrall brand steel bolting systems.

“The specific strength of our manufacturing base in France is its ability to quickly develop new products in response to the evolving needs of customers, particularly in the tunneling market.”

Minova is a leading provider of ground consolidation, improvement of mine ventilation and water control products in Spain.

The company began operating in the country in 1995 as a supplier to the coal mining industry.

In recent years, Minova products have been widely adopted in the civil engineering and tunnelling industries, which now account for the majority of the company’s activity in Spain.

Customers have access to an unmatched range of resins, foams, adhesives, steel bolts and other rock support systems.

Minova’s operations are based at Langreo, near Oviedo in Northern Spain, and include a resin, accessories and equipment warehouse.

Minova in Spain also services customers in Portugal and has been active in the past two years in supporting the growth of Minova’s activities in South America.

The company’s chief executive in Spain is Diego Velez, a mining engineer.

“We have particular expertise in solving ground problems encountered in excavations by tunnel boring machines.”

Velez says if a problem arises during tunnelling, the team can respond rapidly and get the project running again quickly.

“Increasingly, we are being called upon to prepare ground before tunnelling even begins. This lowers the risk of loose, cavernous or faulted rocks creating unexpected and costly delays.”

Minova introduced modern rock support and ground consolidation practices to Russian coal mines when it made its first sales in the country in 1999.

Minova steel bolts and other products quickly found acceptance in the market, leading to the construction of the first of two manufacturing plants.

Minova today produces resin capsules and cementitious powders at Kemerovo, and resin capsules, powders and steel bolts at Leninsk Kuznetsky. Both plants are in the heart of the Kuznetsk Basin, a major coal mining centre in southern Siberia.

Foreign and local competitors have followed Minova into the Russian market, but the company remains the largest supplier in the country in all its core products.

Minova employs more than 300 people in Russia, representing about 10% of its global workforce.

Minova chief executive officer, Europe, Jan Petzold, says the company’s entry to Russia has been a great success story for both Minova and the local coal mining industry.

“Many Russian coal miners were quick to see the benefits of the products and technologies that Minova had pioneered in markets such as Germany and Poland from the 1980s onwards.

“As the Russian mining industry opens up to more private investment, there is growing emphasis on raising safety standards to international levels.

“Our focus is on introducing more Minova products to the local market that reward mine owners by delivering increased safety and productivity.”

Minova’s products and services are now more easily available in Romania after the recent opening an office and warehouse in Bucharest.

The new branch is also responsible for sales and support for customers in neighbouring Bulgaria.

Minova has sold its products via agents for many years to coal mine, civil engineering and tunnelling projects in both countries.

Minova’s leader for the Central European region, Zbig Kuska, says Minova has invested in establishing a bigger presence in Romania because of the country’s growth prospects.

“Romania’s economy is growing strongly and attracting large amounts of international private investment.

Kuska says much of this investment is being directed into upgrading the country’s transport infrastructure, including existing and new tunnels.

“As a leading supplier to these kinds of projects in Europe, we wanted to better support customers in Romania by having a strong presence on the ground.”

The Romanian business is led by Drahomír Janíček with more than 15 years experience and professional skills in business, geotechnics and underground constructions, especially in rock supporting, ground consolidation and water/gas stopping together with Oldřich Bláha, who has a very good knowledge of the Romanian market.

Janíček said the opening of a branch in Romania means customers have easy access to Minova’s technical advice and support.

“Unlike most of our competitors, Minova does not just sell products; we provide customers with technical advice and know-how, along with all the pumps accessories they need to get the best from Minova products.

“This is one of the key benefits of dealing with Minova, and it’s now available here.”

Poland is the largest manufacturer of Minova products in Europe, with three sites and more than 400 employees.

The country is also the location of a new global centre for research and development in cements and powders, reflecting a history of leadership in this field.

The company began operating in Poland in 1993 and grew through a series of acquisitions.

Today, it is the country’s leading supplier of rock support, ground consolidation and mine ventilation products to the coal mining industry in Poland, which is the largest in Europe in terms of value of production.
The company also exports across Europe and Eurasia.

The acquisition of Arnall in 2008 added steel bolts, cable bolts and accessories to the Minova product range manufactured in Poland. This was part of a series of acquisitions worldwide that transformed Minova from a chemical business to a chemical and steel business.

While the coal industry accounts for about 80% of the company’s sales, Minova has a growing base of customers in hard rock mining in Poland and abroad.

The company’s offer to hard rock mining customers includes copper and zinc flotation agents developed in Minova’s Polish laboratories. These products are based on innovative chemical processes and have achieved the highest possible environmental certification from the European Community.

Minova’s workforce in Poland includes about 100 people with disabilities who manufacture a range of high quality dust masks.

Under Polish law, companies must reserve a percentage of total job positions for people with disabilities, but Minova’s commitment goes well beyond this requirement.

Chief executive of Minova in Poland, and Minova’s chief operating officer for Europe, Zbig Kuska, says the company is proud to have created so many opportunities.

“We are very proud to create rewarding and meaningful occupations for large numbers of Polish workers with disabilities.

“Working in our dust mask factory helps them achieve a better standard of living, while producing a product that is vital to the safety of many thousands of mine workers.”

In less than four years, Minova Kazakhstan has become a major supplier to the coal mining industry of Kazakhstan, which is the fastest growing in the world.

The company’s first sales were in 2005 of product from Minova Russia.

Strong customer demand led to the construction of a resin capsule manufacturing plant in Karaganda, the centre of the Kazakh coal mining region

Recent new investment by Minova has added a steel bolt manufacturing line.

Local products are sold along with the whole range of Minova products, including polyurethane and phenol resins, cement mixes, boring equipment and accessories.

The Head of Minova Kazakhstan is Dr. Petr Olenchenko, a mining engineer with more than 26 years of experience in the industry.

He says Minova’s products and technical support have helped many coal miners to modernize their practices and improve both safety and productivity.

“Kazakhstan is one of the world’s fastest growing mining regions.

“Many of the world’s major mining houses are active here, which has been a factor in the strong uptake of Minova products and technologies.”
